Opening Keynote by Tony Bingham

The Power of Collaboration: Transform your Organization with Social Media

Today, the majority of learning within organizations is informal – often by asking other people how to do things. Social media is providing an exciting way to facilitate and capture the informal learning occurring within organizations. The learning function is positioned to impact all of the learning within the organization, not just the formal learning – by understanding how to apply and implement collaborative technologies.

In this session, you will hear from several diverse organizations that are using social media effectively for learning, how they are supporting informal learning and building community, and understand how your organization can leverage the power of social learning.

Presented by Tony Bingham President and CEO, ASTD

Tony BinghamAs the world’s largest professional association dedicated to the training and development field, the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) is at the forefront of trends in learning and workforce development.

Led by President and CEO, Tony Bingham, ASTD offers programs and services to help members improve individual and organizational performance through learning. ASTD’s 128 chapters in the United States and 20 international partners provide opportunities for members to convene at the local and regional levels throughout the world.

Tony is the co-author of The New Social Learning published in August 2010. Through stories and case studies, he and Marcia Conner offer compelling evidence for the training profession on how to transform learning using social media. Tony’s 2007 book, Presenting Learning, was co-authored by Tony Jeary. It was written to help learning professionals articulate the business case for learning more persuasively, position themselves as a strategic partner, and communicate a compelling story about the impact of learning on business results.

Together with the Board of Directors and supported by a staff of 90 and a wide volunteer network, Tony is focused on helping members: lead talent management in their organizations, build their business skills, understand the impact of social media on informal learning, close skills gaps, and connect their work to the strategic priorities of business. ASTD is frequently quoted about these trends and its own research in top-tier business publications such as BusinessWeek, the Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2009, under Tony’s direction, ASTD expanded its reach with the acquisitions of The Bureaucrat, Inc. and its quarterly journal, The Public Manager, and the United Professional Sales Association (UPSA). These affiliations help ASTD to spotlight the value of learning and its impact on achieving results in the public sector and professional sales field.

With broad-based business, financial, operational, and technical management expertise, Tony joined ASTD in 2001 as the Chief Operating Officer / Chief Information Officer. He became President and CEO in February 2004.

Measuring for Success: How CEOs View the Success of Learning Investments

There is no stakeholder more important in learning and development than the top executive, whose commitment, support, and funding is absolutely critical to success. Sometimes the level of executive support depends on the CEO’s perception of the value that learning and development programs contribute to the organization. Previous research includes other opinions regarding the CEO view of success of learning and development. Now, a major study provides a collective input directly from 96 CEOs of Fortune 500 and top privately-owned companies. This unique research reveals interesting insight into the results executives want to see from learning and development compared to what they currently receive. The ROI Institute, Inc. will present the research findings and what they mean to our profession. This session focuses on what the data means to learning professionals.

Presented by Jack J. Phillips, PhD.

Phillips has served as training and development manager at two Fortune 500 firms, senior HR officer at two firms, president of a regional federal savings bank, and a professor of management at a major state university.

Agile Project Management for Workplace Learning Professionals

Many learning professionals struggle with project management. Projects take too long; resources (money and SMEs) are not available or get saddled with scope creep. Agile principles can help the learning profession to focus on delivering a finished program on time that meets the customer's requirements. Agile grew out of the desire to find a better way to develop and deliver software projects. Agile is all about collaboration, leveraging the creativity of teams, building quality products and learning to apply lessons to the next project.

Executive Presence

Defining executive presence is a gray area because for many, it is the essence of leadership. But, presence isn't something you give yourself...it's something you earn from those around you who come to respect your right to speak and your ability to lead. Some have called it an "earned authority." It is a combination of behaviors and attitudes that present a sense of confidence, competence, commitment and authenticity.

Presented by Sally Williamson.

Sally is a leading resource for improving the impact of spoken communication and executive presence. She is a 27 year veteran of developing key messages and coaching executives to deliver them effectively. As President and founder of Sally Williamson & Associates, Sally specializes in executive coaching and developing custom workshops for groups that focus on improving spoken communication skills.

Closing Keynote by Scott Edinger

The Impact of Inspiring Leadership

Say the words 'Great Leader' and what comes into your mind? It's probably hard to describe, but with most great leaders you "know it when you see it." So, does this mean that great leadership is simply something people are born with or is it something that can be learned? After conducting thousands of surveys with leaders across many different industries, we've identified the most important attribute of any great leader: that of inspiring and motivating others. We believe that if developed, this key competency, more than any other, will help leaders and managers become more effective and drive great business results.

Learn about the mystery of inspiring leadership and the research that went into discovering how leaders inspire others. Scott will reveal the 6 different approaches to inspiring leadership and discuss how to implement multiple approaches and help participants learn how to create a plan of action.

Scott is a celebrated author with extensive leadership, business development, consulting, coaching, and training experience. He is currently Executive Vice President of Sales at Zenger Folkman, where he consults with Fortune 500 companies to initiate and implement large-scale performance improvement and leadership initiatives. His knowledge and expertise focus on developing leadership talent, addressing the challenges of organizational change, and how to achieve positive and measurable business results. Scott's charming and commanding presence has made him a popular keynote speaker at national conferences, forums, briefings, and workshops. Prior to joining Zenger Folkman, Scott worked for Huthwaite, Inc. as Senior Vice President of Sales where he led the company to record-levels of growth and success. He served the company in several roles including Vice President of International Channel Distribution and Vice President of Direct Sales. Scott is a co-author of The Inspiring Leader: Unlocking the Secrets of How Extraordinary Leaders Motivate (McGraw-Hill 2009).
