Goodwill of North Georgia (GNG) Project: ASTD ATL volunteers teach skills at GNG that help put people back to work!

A Community Involvement Project & a Partnership between Goodwill of North Georgia (GNG) and the Atlanta Chapter ASTD.

Volunteers either teach our classes to GNG clientele - class participants - at one of several Career Centers in the Atlanta area or they design/develop courses to be taught. Courses are designed to improve computer and other job skills with a goal of helping participants get and keep jobs.

Go to www.goodwillng.org to find out more about GNG and its Career Centers.Check out a great video about Goodwill of N. Georgia Career Centers on youtube

    How can you volunteer?

Decide how your skills and interest fit best (also time availability). We need to fill roles as: Design/Developers and Instructors, as well as those in project management. The GNG Project allows you to practice, learn and develop your own skills or simply give back. This is a great opportunity whether you are in transition, just starting out, or a seasoned pro! But this is NOT your typical, corporate training. You are helping to bring people's skills into this century!

Courses are written at the 9th grade level, are basic and very hands-on! Our Instructor Guide helps you from prep to follow up tasks. Pros won't need much help, but those starting out may appreciate the help. PowerPoint is used very little - only as a visual, but the overhead projector allows participants to see your computer actions!

    What is the time commitment?

    • Instructors: You must be a Chapter member and pass a free, easy background check/drug screen at GNG.
      • Min. Time: about 5 hrs/month.
      • You can volunteer at a Career Center location that works best for you and control how many courses you teach and how often, but only at a Career Center which is running the project.
      • Please contact Julie Padgett at julie_padgett@homedepot.com. She will connect you with the person at Goodwill who will conduct the background check/drug screen. It is a simple and quick process. Please communicate your status to project leaders.

    How do I start?

Contact Julie Padgett and let her know your interest: julie_padgett@homedepot.com

Thanks for considering volunteering with us! We love our volunteers!

I have a STRONG interest in volunteering as a Course Instructor, I have received information from various persons concerning the need for instructors in the Northern region of Atlanta and would love to volunteer my services. I have a background in Workshop Facilitating and would love to engage in this opportunity to both hone in on my skills as well as increase my knowledge within employee/human development.

    My e-mail address is:  cwilburn1966@gmail.com

I have been an active member of the AtlantaASTD chapter since July of this year and look forward to assisting in any area where I'm needed most.

It is not good that I respond after such a long time, but at least I am responding! I started with this project but need to greatly reduce my involvement due to lots of bad news about the time of your message. But I want to respond.

Dave Adelman is taking over my responsibilities and I'll bet you've connected already with him or one of the others. Dave is 770-634-1332 or David.Adelman@comcast.net

Our greatest need is instructors but we only have 2 Goodwill of N. GA Career Centers up and running with our project, Northeast Plaza (NEP) and Woodstock. We hope to start up at other Career Centers once we have plenty enough volunteers and success at these two.

If you remain interested, please contact Dave! Hopefully we'll also increase our project management team, too! Your desire to be involved is wonderful & appreciated!

I am a classroom teacher for more than 15 years. I have taken classes in Instructional

Design and have a certificate for a course taken at Southern Poly Tech last November. I certainly would appreciate the opportunity to volunteer and give back to the community. I can be contacted by email at acklin.shirley@yahoo.com. I look forward in hearing from you, thanks.
