As training practitioners we spend a great deal of time talking about how people learn and how to help people learn and how to use that learning to help organizations improve. But “learning” often looks like doing, and talking with others about what we’re doing. This is frequently how we learn and how we help others learn. In this session we’ll look at what to narrate as well as how and when. The bottom line? To improve workplace learning and knowledge management we need to stop saying, “Tell me what you do” and start asking, “Please show me how you did that?"

    • Develop treatments that will help your content shine
    • Work with hyperlinking to create more engaging experiences
    • Identify ways of transforming-- not just converting--existing courses, materials, and PowerPoint shows
    • Explore ideas for working with art, animations, and interactions to move your program beyond bullet points

We have all heard a lot about coaching. In this session, you will exposed to multiple different coaches and hear insights on using coaching as a tool to build and evolve leaders. In a world where emotional intelligence is becoming a greater priority to drive productivity and engagement, coaching is a valuable skill for all managers, leaders, and day to day employees. You will have a chance to ask questions about coaching during this panel style event.

Pearl J. Alexander, serves as Senior Director, People Strategies, at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). She is a human capital strategist, executive coach, and transformation expert. A profound listener, she enjoys the distinct privilege of inspiring the work of teams responsible for positive culture transformation and delivery of integrated talent management solutions. As such she is often tapped to chair, or serves on cross-functional enterprise committees.

Pearl will serve as the facilitator and moderator of this panel and will be engaging panelists for this event.

With over 25 years in the speaking and training field, I am experienced at listening to clients and designing leadership and team building programs that get results whether that is a keynote for a conference, retreat, or regional meeting or an in-company training program. I can teach your managers how to improve their influence skills and have greater impact when interfacing with their employees.

In the process, I have learned the secrets of how leaders can earn the discretionary effort of employees and have discovered an immutable law: the company with the most discretionary effort wins in the marketplace.

Being a co-author of a forthcoming book, "The Leadership Challenge: Earn the Gift of Discretionary Effort" has helped me solidify 5 management levers for a positive work environment that bring you economic sustainability and increased profitability

Too often, instructional designers end up trapped in their boxes of theory. Sometimes we need to open that box and peer outside to glean ideas and inspiration from sources outside our industry.

Jim Henson started working as a puppeteer in 1954, long before many of us considered corporate instructional design (ID) as a career. Yet, Jim Henson applied many of the core ideas from ID in his imaginative work. Viewing our own theories and ideas used in different ways is a great way to help inspire us to think of new and fearless ideas.

We will cover Henson's use of storyboarding, storytelling, iteration, templates, and more, and bring it back to practical uses in instructional design. We'll get creative, discussing how construction of a Muppet can translate to construction of a course.

Also, this session is fun. There might even be a Muppet.

In this session, you will learn:

    • Understand how the pioneering work of Jim Henson applies to our current instructional design world.

    • Compare some of the risks that Jim Henson took and how they apply to instructional design in our everyday jobs.

    • Identify other places we can look to for inspiration from outside our own field.

    • Find ways to make old ideas seem new again.
